Dana Sochorov\u00e1 is an artist from Slovakia. She was born in 1962 in Liptovsk\u00fd Mikul\u00e1\u0161.She studied at the Academy of Fine Art and Design in Bratislava, in the Departments of Painting (1991-1997) and the Graphic Design (1992-1994). In recent years she has been working on a long term time-lapse project which also forms a part of her PhD study at the Academy of Fine Art and Design. This project is still in progress. She exhibited her work widely in solo and group exhibitions in Slovakia and abroad. She also taught art at all levels from primary school to university.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\n<\/em>The long term time-lapse project, part of which I\u00a0present here, consists of recording everyday events and situations documented in the passage of time with the intention to show life in its unstoppable flow. Although the narrative in the background is personal, it also has a universal validity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The beginning of this project is connected to the birth of my daughter (in 2002) and it is still ongoing. Its main part consists of my responses to the actual realities of life with my child, recording, documenting, archiving, ordering them and eventually presenting them. This part of the project involved intense experiece of the first years of life with my child and an effort to mediate the experience of seeing life through her eyes, her spontaneity. Everything we have grown out of, what has faded away.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the following years the project developed and branched into other themes and cycles. More recently it has involved the processing and developing themes of private life within further cycles (e.g. Time and Reality, Impractical Woman, Images of Reality, Reconstructions, To Mum with Love), observing continuity in the passage of time \u2013 the present but also the past (family memory, personal history).
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

My point of departure is my personal experience of motherhood and the inevitability of performing the role of a woman \u2013 mother. I work with various themes of everyday life, family, and personal situation, mainly from the point of view of gender and determination by it. I\u00a0respond to traditional customs and stereotypes with the intention of disrupting them and re-evaluating them. It means questioning the established idea of a natural feminine aptitude to cope with activities connected with the role of a woman and mother and pointing out the ambivalence between this role and creative needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the themes I work with is the role of a woman as a home builder and a food provider. A cycle of works with a dual title Evidence of Ability and Images of Incompetence is a polemic about the generally established idea that woman have a natural, innate ability to master these activities, and with the tendency to rate her on the basis of the standard of her mastering these skills.<\/span><\/p>\n

A part of this thematic series is an event – finalising the project Impractical Woman \u2013 which includes the publication of a magazine with an identical title and subsequent confrontation of it with various situations in everyday life, like placing it among other women\u2019s magazines in a newspaper kiosk, at the railway station etc. This work was inspired by the publication of numerous women\u2019s magazines presenting the image of a perfect woman and giving advice how to master various aspects of the female role.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m using gentle irony with this subject and I provide a picture of personal failure in this role, and also of the beauty which can be found in it (cycle Impractical Woman \/ Associations).<\/span><\/p>\n

The tiresome routine everyday activities are represented in the cycle Dishwasher (May 28, 2012 \u2013 May 28,2013) as a photographic record of daily activity totalling 365 photographs, one from every day, dated and timed.<\/span><\/p>\n

A series of photographs Image of the Kitchen Window captures the changes in the nature ouside in a short period of time and is a representation of the opposite pole to the tiresome domestic activity. And last but not least, of the need to escape it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDlhodob\u00fd \u010dasozbern\u00fd projekt, ktor\u00e9ho \u010das\u0165 prezentujem, predstavuje z\u00e1znamy ka\u017edodenn\u00fdch udalost\u00ed a\u00a0situ\u00e1ci\u00ed dokumentovan\u00fdch v\u00a0priebehu \u010dasu so z\u00e1merom zobrazi\u0165 \u017eivot v jeho nezadr\u017eate\u013enom plynut\u00ed, \u010do sa deje s\u00edce na pozad\u00ed individu\u00e1lneho pr\u00edbehu, ale je aj v\u0161eobecn\u00e9, univerz\u00e1lne.<\/span><\/p>\n

Za\u010diatok projektu sa via\u017ee k\u00a0narodeniu mojej dc\u00e9ry (2002) a\u00a0trv\u00e1 doteraz. Jeho kme\u0148ov\u00fa \u010das\u0165 tvor\u00ed reagovanie na aktu\u00e1lne \u017eit\u00fd vlastn\u00fd \u017eivot s die\u0165a\u0165om, jeho zaznamen\u00e1vanie, dokumentovanie, archivovanie, zora\u010fovanie a\u00a0n\u00e1sledn\u00e9 prezentovanie. T\u00e1to \u010das\u0165 projektu sa via\u017ee k\u00a0intenz\u00edvnemu pre\u017e\u00edvaniu prv\u00fdch rokov \u017eivota s\u00a0die\u0165a\u0165om a\u00a0snahu o sprostredkovanie z\u00e1\u017eitku z jeho vn\u00edmania sveta \u2013 predstavuje vn\u00edmanie \u017eivota z\u00a0poh\u013eadu die\u0165a\u0165a – z bezprostredn\u00e9ho detsk\u00e9ho poh\u013eadu, spont\u00e1nnos\u0165. V\u0161etko, z\u00a0\u010doho sme vyr\u00e1stli, od \u010doho sme sa vzdialili.<\/span><\/p>\n

V\u00a0\u010fal\u0161\u00edch rokoch sa projekt rozv\u00edjal a\u00a0rozvetvoval do \u010fal\u0161\u00edch t\u00e9m a\u00a0cyklov. V\u00a0poslednom \u010dase je to spracov\u00e1vanie a\u00a0rozv\u00edjanie t\u00e9m s\u00fakromia v\u00a0\u010fal\u0161\u00edch cykloch (\u010cas a\u00a0skuto\u010dnos\u0165, Nepraktick\u00e1 \u017eena, Obrazy skuto\u010dnosti, Rekon\u0161trukcie, Mame z\u00a0l\u00e1sky…), sledovanie kontinuity, plynutia v \u010dase – v s\u00fa\u010dasnosti, ale aj v minulosti (pam\u00e4\u0165 rodiny, osobn\u00e1 hist\u00f3ria).<\/span><\/p>\n

Vych\u00e1dzam z osobnej sk\u00fasenosti materstva a\u00a0nevyhnutnosti fungovania v\u00a0roli \u017eeny \u2013 matky. Zaober\u00e1m sa viacer\u00fdmi t\u00e9mami ka\u017edodenn\u00e9ho \u017eivota, rodiny a\u00a0osobnej situ\u00e1cie preva\u017ene z\u00a0poh\u013eadu rodu a\u00a0determin\u00e1cie n\u00edm. Reagujem na za\u017eit\u00e9 konvencie a stereotypy so z\u00e1merom naru\u0161i\u0165 ich a prehodnoti\u0165. Ide o\u00a0spochybnenie zau\u017e\u00edvanej predstavy o\u00a0prirodzenej schopnosti \u017eeny zvl\u00e1dnu\u0165 \u010dinnosti s\u00favisiace s\u00a0rolou \u017eeny – a matky, a\u00a0tie\u017e pouk\u00e1zanie na ambivalenciu medzi touto rolou a\u00a0tvorivou potrebou.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jednou z\u00a0t\u00e9m, s\u00a0ktor\u00fdmi pracujem je reagovanie na rolu \u017eeny ako\u00a0udr\u017eiavate\u013eky domova a poskytovate\u013eky potravy. Cyklus pr\u00e1c so zdvojen\u00fdm n\u00e1zvom: Ka\u017edodenn\u00e9 diela alebo D\u00f4kazy schopnosti a\u00a0Obrazy neschopnosti polemizuje so v\u0161eobecne zau\u017e\u00edvanou predstavou o\u00a0prirodzenej, vrodenej schopnosti \u017eeny ovl\u00e1da\u0165 tieto \u010dinnosti a\u00a0posudzovanie jej hodnoty na z\u00e1klade \u00farovne zvl\u00e1dnutia t\u00fdchto zru\u010dnost\u00ed.<\/span><\/p>\n

S\u00fa\u010das\u0165ou tohto tematick\u00e9ho celku je akcia \u2013 zav\u0155\u0161enie projektu Nepraktick\u00e1 \u017eena \u2013 vr\u00e1tane vydania \u010dasopisu s\u00a0rovnak\u00fdm n\u00e1zvom a\u00a0jeho n\u00e1sledn\u00e1 konfront\u00e1cia v\u00a0r\u00f4znych situ\u00e1ci\u00e1ch be\u017en\u00e9ho \u017eivota \u2013 umiestnenie medzi in\u00e9 \u017eensk\u00e9 \u010dasopisy v\u00a0novinovom st\u00e1nku, na stanici, a pod. Pr\u00e1ca je in\u0161pirovan\u00e1 mno\u017estvom vyd\u00e1van\u00fdch \u017eensk\u00fdch \u010dasopisov prezentuj\u00facich\u00a0obraz dokonalej \u017eeny a\u00a0poskytuj\u00facich rady k zvl\u00e1dnutiu r\u00f4znych str\u00e1nok \u017eenskej \u00falohy.<\/span><\/p>\n

T\u00fato oblas\u0165 jemne ironizujem a\u00a0poskytujem obraz osobn\u00e9ho zlyh\u00e1vania v\u00a0tejto roli a\u00a0aj kr\u00e1su, ktor\u00fa je mo\u017en\u00e9 v\u00a0\u0148om uvidie\u0165 (Cyklus Nepraktick\u00e1 \u017eena \/ Asoci\u00e1cie).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00danavn\u00fa rutinu ka\u017edodenn\u00fdch \u010dinnost\u00ed predstavuje Cyklus Um\u00fdva\u010dka (28.5.2012 – 28. 5.2013) – fotografick\u00e9 z\u00e1znamy dennej \u010dinnosti v\u00a0po\u010dte 365 fotografi\u00ed z\u00a0ka\u017ed\u00e9ho d\u0148a s\u00a0d\u00e1tumom a\u00a0\u010dasovan\u00edm.<\/span><\/p>\n

S\u00e9ria fotografi\u00ed Obraz kuchynsk\u00e9ho okna je zachyten\u00edm vonkaj\u0161\u00edch pr\u00edrodn\u00fdch zmien v\u00a0priebehu kr\u00e1tkeho \u010dasov\u00e9ho \u00faseku a vyjadren\u00edm opa\u010dn\u00e9ho p\u00f3lu \u00famornej dom\u00e1cej \u010dinnosti. V\u00a0neposlednom rade aj potrebou unikn\u00fa\u0165 z\u00a0nej.<\/span><\/p>\n
