Dana Sochorová: Impractical Woman

Dana Sochorová is an artist from Slovakia. She was born in 1962 in Liptovský Mikuláš.She studied at the Academy of Fine Art and Design in Bratislava, in the Departments of Painting (1991-1997) and the Graphic Design (1992-1994). In recent years she has been working on a long term time-lapse project which also forms a part of her PhD study at the Academy of Fine Art and Design. This project is still in progress. She exhibited her work widely in solo and group exhibitions in Slovakia and abroad. She also taught art at all levels from primary school to university.

The long term time-lapse project, part of which I present here, consists of recording everyday events and situations documented in the passage of time with the intention to show life in its unstoppable flow. Although the narrative in the background is personal, it also has a universal validity.

The beginning of this project is connected to the birth of my daughter (in 2002) and it is still ongoing. Its main part consists of my responses to the actual realities of life with my child, recording, documenting, archiving, ordering them and eventually presenting them. This part of the project involved intense experiece of the first years of life with my child and an effort to mediate the experience of seeing life through her eyes, her spontaneity. Everything we have grown out of, what has faded away.

In the following years the project developed and branched into other themes and cycles. More recently it has involved the processing and developing themes of private life within further cycles (e.g. Time and Reality, Impractical Woman, Images of Reality, Reconstructions, To Mum with Love), observing continuity in the passage of time – the present but also the past (family memory, personal history).

My point of departure is my personal experience of motherhood and the inevitability of performing the role of a woman – mother. I work with various themes of everyday life, family, and personal situation, mainly from the point of view of gender and determination by it. I respond to traditional customs and stereotypes with the intention of disrupting them and re-evaluating them. It means questioning the established idea of a natural feminine aptitude to cope with activities connected with the role of a woman and mother and pointing out the ambivalence between this role and creative needs.

One of the themes I work with is the role of a woman as a home builder and a food provider. A cycle of works with a dual title Evidence of Ability and Images of Incompetence is a polemic about the generally established idea that woman have a natural, innate ability to master these activities, and with the tendency to rate her on the basis of the standard of her mastering these skills.

A part of this thematic series is an event – finalising the project Impractical Woman – which includes the publication of a magazine with an identical title and subsequent confrontation of it with various situations in everyday life, like placing it among other women’s magazines in a newspaper kiosk, at the railway station etc. This work was inspired by the publication of numerous women’s magazines presenting the image of a perfect woman and giving advice how to master various aspects of the female role.

I’m using gentle irony with this subject and I provide a picture of personal failure in this role, and also of the beauty which can be found in it (cycle Impractical Woman / Associations).

The tiresome routine everyday activities are represented in the cycle Dishwasher (May 28, 2012 – May 28,2013) as a photographic record of daily activity totalling 365 photographs, one from every day, dated and timed.

A series of photographs Image of the Kitchen Window captures the changes in the nature ouside in a short period of time and is a representation of the opposite pole to the tiresome domestic activity. And last but not least, of the need to escape it.

Dlhodobý časozberný projekt, ktorého časť prezentujem, predstavuje záznamy každodenných udalostí a situácií dokumentovaných v priebehu času so zámerom zobraziť život v jeho nezadržateľnom plynutí, čo sa deje síce na pozadí individuálneho príbehu, ale je aj všeobecné, univerzálne.

Začiatok projektu sa viaže k narodeniu mojej dcéry (2002) a trvá doteraz. Jeho kmeňovú časť tvorí reagovanie na aktuálne žitý vlastný život s dieťaťom, jeho zaznamenávanie, dokumentovanie, archivovanie, zoraďovanie a následné prezentovanie. Táto časť projektu sa viaže k intenzívnemu prežívaniu prvých rokov života s dieťaťom a snahu o sprostredkovanie zážitku z jeho vnímania sveta – predstavuje vnímanie života z pohľadu dieťaťa – z bezprostredného detského pohľadu, spontánnosť. Všetko, z čoho sme vyrástli, od čoho sme sa vzdialili.

V ďalších rokoch sa projekt rozvíjal a rozvetvoval do ďalších tém a cyklov. V poslednom čase je to spracovávanie a rozvíjanie tém súkromia v ďalších cykloch (Čas a skutočnosť, Nepraktická žena, Obrazy skutočnosti, Rekonštrukcie, Mame z lásky…), sledovanie kontinuity, plynutia v čase – v súčasnosti, ale aj v minulosti (pamäť rodiny, osobná história).

Vychádzam z osobnej skúsenosti materstva a nevyhnutnosti fungovania v roli ženy – matky. Zaoberám sa viacerými témami každodenného života, rodiny a osobnej situácie prevažne z pohľadu rodu a determinácie ním. Reagujem na zažité konvencie a stereotypy so zámerom narušiť ich a prehodnotiť. Ide o spochybnenie zaužívanej predstavy o prirodzenej schopnosti ženy zvládnuť činnosti súvisiace s rolou ženy – a matky, a tiež poukázanie na ambivalenciu medzi touto rolou a tvorivou potrebou.

Jednou z tém, s ktorými pracujem je reagovanie na rolu ženy ako udržiavateľky domova a poskytovateľky potravy. Cyklus prác so zdvojeným názvom: Každodenné diela alebo Dôkazy schopnosti a Obrazy neschopnosti polemizuje so všeobecne zaužívanou predstavou o prirodzenej, vrodenej schopnosti ženy ovládať tieto činnosti a posudzovanie jej hodnoty na základe úrovne zvládnutia týchto zručností.

Súčasťou tohto tematického celku je akcia – zavŕšenie projektu Nepraktická žena – vrátane vydania časopisu s rovnakým názvom a jeho následná konfrontácia v rôznych situáciách bežného života – umiestnenie medzi iné ženské časopisy v novinovom stánku, na stanici, a pod. Práca je inšpirovaná množstvom vydávaných ženských časopisov prezentujúcich obraz dokonalej ženy a poskytujúcich rady k zvládnutiu rôznych stránok ženskej úlohy.

Túto oblasť jemne ironizujem a poskytujem obraz osobného zlyhávania v tejto roli a aj krásu, ktorú je možné v ňom uvidieť (Cyklus Nepraktická žena / Asociácie).

Únavnú rutinu každodenných činností predstavuje Cyklus Umývačka (28.5.2012 – 28. 5.2013) – fotografické záznamy dennej činnosti v počte 365 fotografií z každého dňa s dátumom a časovaním.

Séria fotografií Obraz kuchynského okna je zachytením vonkajších prírodných zmien v priebehu krátkeho časového úseku a vyjadrením opačného pólu úmornej domácej činnosti. V neposlednom rade aj potrebou uniknúť z nej.
